Metro Vancouver's linguistic map is specific and well known: Cantonese and Mandarin across Richmond, Kerrisdale and parts of Burnaby, Punjabi throughout Surrey and Delta, Korean and Farsi concentrated on the North Shore and in Coquitlam.

Cable sells each of those groups as an international add-on, typically $15 to $30 a month, layered on a base bundle. A household watching in two languages ends up paying for the bundle twice over in add-ons.

Two honest limits. Internet is still a bill and this does not reduce it, so the comparison is television against television. And a household watching two English channels would do better with an antenna than with either product.

A growing share of Metro Vancouver towers include internet in the maintenance fee, which is convenient and genuinely fine for this service most of the time. The thing to understand is that the capacity is divided among everyone in the building, so the number in the strata documents is not the number you get on a Sunday night.

Test it the honest way. Run a speed test on the television itself, at the hour you would actually be watching, not on a laptop at two in the afternoon. If the evening figure holds above 15 Mbps you are fine; if it collapses, the building line is the problem and no IPTV provider can engineer around it.

Where you do control your own connection, the standard advice applies: get the television onto 5 GHz or onto ethernet, since a tower full of routers makes 2.4 GHz close to unusable in the evening. And rain, unlike on a dish, is simply not a factor here, because there is no outdoor equipment for a Pacific Northwest winter to interfere with.

There is nothing to tell the strata council, no notice to post, no technician to book into the loading bay and no elevator to reserve. That last one is not a joke in this city, and it is the reason a fair number of downtown households give up on cable installations entirely.
