A large share of Calgary works patterns that do not line up with broadcast schedules: rotating shifts, nights, and two-weeks-on rotations at sites north of the city. Conventional television assumes you are on the sofa when the thing airs, and charges you for a PVR when you are not.

Calgary has absorbed a great many interprovincial arrivals over the past few years, and one of the small frictions of moving is discovering that the television package on offer in Alberta is not the one you had. French-language channels in particular tend to become an add-on the moment you cross into Alberta.

Here the whole catalogue is in every plan. The French lineup, the national English channels and international programming all sit behind the same login, so a household from Montreal or Moncton does not have to rebuild anything.

The same applies to newcomers from further afield. Calgary's northeast in particular (Saddle Ridge, Falconridge, Castleridge and the surrounding communities) is home to large Filipino and South Asian populations, and those channels are in the base plan rather than a per-language tier.

The number that catches people out is not the headline price, it is the step-up. A two-year term is sold at a promotional rate that always ends, usually in month thirteen, and the increase arrives on a bill nobody reads closely. Add $15 to $25 a month for a set-top box you will never own and the second year looks nothing like the first.

Against that, this is a fixed amount for a fixed term with no year two. A twelve-month plan is $79.99 CAD, and if a better option appears next spring you simply do not buy another one.

Two things worth saying against our own case. Home internet is still required, so nothing here removes that bill. And if the television is genuinely on for two channels a week, neither this nor a cable package is worth buying; an antenna does that job for nothing.

Sport is normally the reason a Calgary household stays on a contract it has otherwise outgrown, because the channels carrying it are placed in the upper packages by design. Every playoff run makes that more expensive.

Because live viewing and shift work do not always align, catch-up matters as much as the live feed here. A game that started while you were at site is still available afterwards, and there is no PVR rental attached to that.

A word on what to expect at peak. The heaviest moment for any provider is a playoff night, when the whole subscriber base opens one channel at once; we add capacity in advance of those nights specifically. If yours ever falls over on one, say so and use the 7-day money-back window rather than waiting out the term.

In-city Calgary connectivity is strong, and fibre reaches most of the newer communities on the edges: Evanston, Auburn Bay, Mahogany and the rest of the post-2010 build. The older inner-city stock is more mixed, but even the slower plans there sit well above what live playback needs.

Where a picture breaks up in the city, the cause is nearly always distance from the router rather than the plan itself. Test the speed on the television, not on a phone standing next to the router, because those two numbers are frequently nothing alike.

Beyond the city limits (Bearspaw, Springbank and the acreages further out) the connection is the whole variable. Fixed wireless can look fine at noon and fold at eight in the evening, and satellite plans with a monthly data cap are a genuinely poor fit for anything live. Buy a one-month plan first and find out cheaply.

If you are heading out on rotation, buy one month rather than twelve. It is the same catalogue and the same servers, it just costs more per month, and it means you find out how camp internet behaves for $19.99 CAD instead of $79.99 CAD. Move to a longer term once you know.
